The Rapid Rise of AI in Creative Education
AI tools are becoming more capable of handling tasks once thought to require human intuition. Automated grading, personalised learning paths, and AI tutors are already in use. These tools can analyse student performance data to tailor lessons, provide instant feedback, and free teachers from routine tasks.
However, the proposition that artificial intelligence could fully replace educators in art and design education overlooks the fundamentally studio-based and practice-led nature of these disciplines. Teaching in art and design extends beyond the transmission of technical or conceptual content; it involves the ongoing interpretation of visual inquiry, the cultivation of material intelligence, and the facilitation of iterative making processes. It also requires sustained engagement with students’ developing aesthetic judgment, embodied skill acquisition, and individual creative trajectories within situated studio contexts.
While AI tools may assist in ideation, reference generation, documentation, and reflective writing, they cannot replicate the tacit, embodied, and relational dimensions of critique, nor the situated pedagogical judgement required to respond to works-in-progress. Accordingly, AI is best understood as a supplementary resource that may support aspects of design thinking and communication, rather than a substitute for studio-based teaching and critically engaged pedagogical practice.
Why Critical Thinking and Deep Understanding Matter More Than Ever
In creative subjects like drawing, illustration, writing, and design, the value lies in original thought, personal expression, and experience. AI can generate ideas, suggest improvements, or even create images, but it cannot replace the human spark that drives creativity and creates art.
Critical thinking helps students evaluate AI-generated suggestions rather than accept them blindly. Deep understanding allows learners to build on AI assistance, using it as a tool rather than a crutch. For example, in a drawing course, students might use AI to explore composition ideas but must still develop their own style and technique.
How AI Can Complement Teaching and Learning
AI works best when it supports human interaction instead of replacing it. In feedback-rich environments, AI can provide quick, objective feedback on technical aspects, such as grammar and structure, allowing teachers to focus on higher-level guidance.
In creative education, AI can be used as a pedagogical support tool to enhance teaching and learning without displacing core studio-based practices. For example, educators may use AI to identify recurring patterns in student misunderstandings or technical errors, enabling more targeted in-class interventions and feedback.
AI can also support the design of differentiated practice tasks that respond to varied student skill levels and learning needs, thereby extending opportunities for scaffolded skill development. Learning analytics can assist in monitoring student progress over time by providing longitudinal insights into engagement and development trajectories, which can inform more responsive teaching strategies.
AI may further support academic labour through the drafting and refinement of assessment rubrics aligned with Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), improving clarity and consistency in assessment design. AI can contribute to the iterative review of CLOs themselves by highlighting potential misalignments between intended outcomes, teaching activities, and assessed student work, although such curriculum decisions remain the responsibility of academic staff exercising disciplinary and pedagogical judgement.
Students benefit from immediate responses and tailored resources, but they still need human feedback to understand context, nuance, and emotional impact.

Insights from a Drawing and Illustration Course
In my drawing and illustration course, AI tools are integrated carefully to maintain balance. Students use AI for writing assistance when describing their work or reflecting on their process. This helps them articulate ideas clearly without getting stuck on language.
However, the course emphasizes that students’ creative processes must remain visible. Teachers review drafts, sketches, and reflections to understand how students develop their ideas. This transparency ensures that AI supports learning rather than obscuring it.
Aligning AI use with Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) is essential. In drawing courses, where CLOs typically emphasise the development of observational, technical, and material-based skills, AI should not replace students’ embodied drawing practice or skill acquisition. Instead, AI may be used to support students in articulating, reflecting on, and refining their conceptual understanding and communication of visual work, provided it does not substitute the core act of drawing or evidence of skill development.
Edited reflections from students show how AI helped them improve clarity and structure while preserving their voice. Citing the use of AI respects academic integrity and encourages honest self-assessment.
Preparing for a Balanced Future
By the end of 2026, AI will be a standard part of education, but its role will depend on how educators choose to use it. The goal is a balanced approach where AI handles routine tasks and provides personalised support, while teachers focus on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and emotional growth.
Educators should:
Train students to critically evaluate AI outputs.
Design assignments that require original thought and visible processes.
Use AI analytics to inform, not replace, human judgment.
Encourage open discussions about the ethical use of AI in learning.
Students should learn to see AI as a tool that enhances their skills rather than a shortcut that replaces effort.
Final Thoughts
Artificial intelligence is likely to significantly reshape teaching and learning practices by the end of 2026, particularly through changes in how students access information, develop ideas, and receive feedback. However, in art and design education, it is unlikely to displace the relational and studio-based dimensions that underpin meaningful learning. Critical thinking, sustained visual inquiry, and deep disciplinary understanding remain central to creative practice, where knowledge is developed through iterative making, critique, and reflection rather than solely through information acquisition.
When integrated pedagogically, AI can enhance learning by supporting rapid feedback, scaffolding ideation, and enabling more personalised forms of academic support. This, in turn, may allow educators to concentrate more intentionally on higher-order pedagogical roles, including fostering critical discourse, facilitating studio critique, and cultivating collaborative learning environments. These relational and interpretive dimensions of teaching, particularly within creative disciplines, remain beyond the operational capacity of current AI systems.
In this evolving landscape, I find it essential to embrace AI as a partner in education, enhancing our teaching methodologies while preserving the core values that make learning a deeply human experience.
